A truly charming antique American mirror in the Hitchcock style, with beautifully turned columnar wood sides, ringed detailing, and the most wonderful hand stenciled folk art designs in soft gold and dark accents. Each corner block features a stenciled flower medallion, and the side columns have delicate stylized leaf and floral motifs running their length. The piece is named for Lambert Hitchcock, a Connecticut chairmaker who founded a furniture factory in 1818 in what became Hitchcocksville (now Riverton, CT). His stenciled and painted furniture became so iconic of early American style that the "Hitchcock" name came to refer to a whole genre of stenciled American furniture and accessories through the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The mirror is backed by an original "Lambert Hitchcock, Agent, Chair Manufacturer" reproduction advertisement from August 17, 1830 (visible on the reverse), which adds wonderful provenance and storytelling to the piece. As a Connecticut based shop, I have an especially soft spot for these. Original mirror glass with light age appropriate wear.
