These sculptural German Shepherd bookends depict Buddy, the first Seeing Eye guide dog in America, whose partnership with Morris Frank helped pioneer guide-dog accessibility in the United States.
The design is associated with American artist McClelland Barclay and features beautifully expressive faces, tall ears, and a timeworn bronze-toned finish with gorgeous green verdigris-style patina.
The bookends are made of lightweight, hollow metal, with the exact metal composition currently unconfirmed. Each is marked “BUDDY” on the front and “THE ORIGINAL SEEING EYE DOG FOR THE BLIND” on the back.
They look wonderful displayed as traditional bookends or individually as little decorative sculptures. Original manufacturing date and maker have not been verified.
